Between human beings, love is a relational word. Real love is not only about the feelings of the lover. It is when one person believes in another person and shows it.
To love is to feel and act lovingly. You know without love we are nothing, and the very essence of God is love. He is the expert on love...no one understands love better than God.
The ancient Greeks had four different words to translate love, with each word identifying a separate and distinct type or degree of love:
- The first word for love is Eros. It describes erotic love and refers to sexual love.
- The second word for love is Storge. And this type of love refers to family love.
- The third word word for love is Philia. this speaks of love for a friend or acquaintance. It is the love of deep friendship and partnership.
- The fourth word for love is Agape. This is the highest form of love, this is divine love. It’s the word that is used when talking about God’s love. It is a love that loves without changing. It is a self-giving love that gives without demanding or expecting repayment. It is love so great that it can be given to the unlovable or unappealing. It is love that loves even when rejected. That’s how God loves.
Note: There are some others that are not popularly mentioned, like Mania which is obsessive love, Ludus playful love, Pragma enduring love and Philautia which is self love.
